George,

Your report is very frequently seen here, but the diagnosis and resolution will
vary depending upon the actual symptoms, which you have not yet provided.

Please describe precisely what you are trying to do, what procedure you are
using, and exactly what error message or condition you are experiencing.

And George, posting your email address openly will get you more unwanted email,
than wanted email. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself
a bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.

Let's call the computers A,B, and C. All have Win XP Pro with Sp2.
I want to copy or move files into computer C from either A or B. No
problem doing the same thing from C into A or B,or B into A
message I get "make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the
file is not being used". Plenty of disk space,120gigs left on the disk.
I was able to do this a few days ago.

George,

Inability to copy files is a very frequent complaint here. There are so many
different possible causes though.

Is there a personal firewall on either computer (now or ever in the past)?
Misconfigured firewalls are a common cause of this sort of problem. With XP SP2
Windows Firewall, make sure that the File and Printer Sharing exception is
enabled.

Any idea what might have changed on one or more of the computers, that might
relate to the problem?

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS consistently set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the Guest account is
enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run - "cmd", then type
"net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure that the password
for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control userpasswords2"; select Guest,
click Reset Password, click OK without entering a new password.

Remember, with Simple File Sharing, you'll not be able to access "C:\Program
Files", "C:\Windows", or any of the profile related folders such as "My
Documents". All of those folders require individual user, or administrator
access, and Guest access gives you neither.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.
