HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did a new install of Windows XP Pro on a new computer. I had a connection for a few hours and then I didn't. I installed sp1 and all the critical updates. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling sp1 and my driver. I know my DSL is working because I still have internet on my laptop.
I troubleshooted with a tech from ISP and he said it is a Windows problem. When I type in ipconfig I get 169.254.x.x. I tried ipconfig /release and /renew also and it came up saying that it couln't contact the DHCP server. I also tried new cables, reseting the modem, reseting the router, and bypassing the router and none of those helped either.
If any one could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance,

there could be several issues such as firewall and a few others best thing
is to do ipconfig /all on your laptop note IP address default gateway and
DNS servers.

Go to your desktop and enter that information manually and see if it works.
If it does it is properly a firewall issue if not then the NICK may not be
working properly. Have you checked under device manager to see if NICK is
working properly. IS the XP firewall turned off?

Do you have a DHCP server available? In other words, are you
connecting directly to the Internet via a high speed service such as
Cable or ADSL with no router in between?

Or if you have a router does it include a DHCP server (the router
specs will say so) and if so is it active and functioning? You may
have to access the router configuration screens in order to determine
this. The documentation for your router will tell you how to do this.

Good luck
