I have been connecting a laptop running XP home edition and a desktop
(running same) using a Linksys (54g) successfully for some time. I have run
into an error message that indicates that my work group "is not accessible.
You might not have permission,...." I can still access the internet from
either machine (through the router and cable modem.

The only change that may have had an impact was upgrading to Norton Internet
Security. I disabled it - no change. I un-installed it using an un-install
tool downloaded from Symantec. Still no change.

I can ping the IP addresses. I can access each computer from the other
putting the IP address into <RUN>. But when I try to set up a the work group
or add a network place, it indicates I don't have permission!
I have even un-installed an re-installed all of the Microsoft network
components on each machine.
Spent the day on the phone with Dell and now chatting with HP. Has anyone
run into this before?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Bruce,

There are 3 possible causes for this problem.
# Registry setting restrictanonymous.
# Misconfigured / overlooked firewall.
# Browser conflict.
# Non-activated Guest account.

Check restrictanonymous on each computer.

Look for any misconfigured or overlooked firewalls. What antivirus products do
you use?

Diagnose a browser conflict by running "browstat status" on all computers.

Make sure the Guest account is properly activated on each computer.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" for each computer,
and some details about your network, here.

I have the same problem. Have you had any luck? It seems all I have to do is
unplug the laptop take it with me and when I plug it in again it will not
recognize the workgroup. The computer I have XP pro on sees the laptop but
the laptop with home on it will not see the pro. If I leave them on for a
couple of day the laptop eventualy sees the one with home and all is well.

Rick,

It would be better for you, and for everybody else, if you would start a NEW
thread, with a more descriptive subject, and some details. Help us to help you.
