Can't Change the VGA (default monitor)

I can't change the VGA and the color will not go any
higher than 16--I need 256 color to run aol, as well as
some of my other programs. How do I change this?
 
Check the hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows 2000
driver for your graphics adapter.
