Can't boot - wont boot!

I've tried to the group for similar problem without success so any help or
clue would be much appreciated.
O/S Windows XP home - has run for ages without any problems at all. Came to
boot this morning, system gets to Windows page with the green lights bar
then restarts the boot process and just continues in this cycle. I have an
up to date antivirus prog running. The only possible cause I can think is I
inserted a CD containing data last night and I didn't scan it for a virus.
The main problem is that I am desperate to save some of the stuff I have -
or had! - on my HD.
Any Ideas?

Perform a repair-install. It should keep your data.

Thanks Roger - your reply is really appreciated.
I've just read that link and it seems to rely on the use of system restore
to 'put back' settings etc after the 'repair install'. I'm sure my restore
facility was turned off following a recent virus removal exercise. I noticed
one of your earlier posts when you recommended CHKDSK from the recovery
console - is there much risk of data loss using this or the FBR facility.

Hi Jeanette,

You could try booting in safe mode with the command prompt (or boot
with the recovery console) and typing
chkdsk /r
(see chkdsk /? for all the options)
This will repair any damage in the harddisk and probably won't affect
your data.

Another option, boot from the recovey console and type this command:
fixboot
(To fix the boot record)
if this doesn't work then try this command
fixmbr
(to fix the master boot record)

The problem we have is the lack of information, as it does not post a
message.
