I recently installed an additional hard drive in my computer. The hard drive
is corrupt, but with valuble data. I am installing it in an attempt to copy
and backup the files onto my primary hard drive. This is what happened:

1. Windows initially found and installed the hard drive but would not list
it in Windows Explorer. The only hard drive listed was my Primary C:\ drive
2. I then went to disk management, where it showed my primary drive and a
HEALTHY FAT32 Maxtor hard drive(the corrupt drive). Disk management did see
my drive as being "Healthy'. Although, the drive did not have a drive letter
or label for the drive. There was nothing listed for the corrupt drive under
the VOLUME column. I right clicked on the drive in an attempt to assign it a
drive letter, but the option was greyed out. The only option I had was to
delete the partition.
3. I removed and re-installed the drive several times with several
restarts.
4. I downloaded the PowerMax hard drive tools from Mator, booted from a
floppy and did a complete scan on the hard drive. The program found no
errors.
5. I booted from the WinXP cd and went into recovery console. Recovery
console saw the drive as an E:\ drive. My primary is C:\ and CDROM was d:\.
Recovery console did list the hard drive's files when I performed a DIR
command.
6. I executed FIXMBR and it performed successfully, but after I restarted
normally, Windows still would not list the hard drive in Windows Explorer.

As you can probably see, I am reaching the end of my rope. Any assistance
will be extremely appreciated.

Since you apparently won't be able to retrieve the data from within
Windows, try using Knoppix, a Linux distro on a live cd. You will need
a computer with two cd drives, one of which is a cd/dvd-rw. To get
Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast Internet connection and
third-party burning software. Download the Knoppix .iso from
www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then boot with it and it
will be able to see the Windows files. Use the K3b burning program to
burn the files to cd/dvd-r's. Or you can boot the computer with a
Bart's PE and use a usb key to get the data.
