I have an existing 2nd HDD (30 Gig)which I use for data storage. It shows up
in Device Manager and Disk Management but XP Pro will not let me assign a
drive letter to it using neither the Disk Management method or the Command
Prompt method. This drive has all my data on it and I REALLY need to gain
access to it. Please help!!!

Has the drive been there working and now you cannot access it. If so ,
it could have failed. If not, make sure that the
red stripe on the Ribbon cable faces the white molex power connector
for the hard drive. Also, make sure the jumper on
the drive is set correctly ( master, slave or cable select ).

I appreciate your response but all physical connections and settings are
correct. If they weren't I don't believe it would not show up at all. This
drive was working fine with WIN98SE.

I had the same problem when I installed xp home on my system, I eventully had
to re format using xp before it would recognize it...

Not a solution, just possible advice.

If you haven't yet, and *before* you continue playing with this HD, BACK IT
UP. Take it to another PC with a CD burner and back it up.
