You need to boot in safe mode. Press F8 repeatedly while Windows is
booting up. Youmight have to type 'administrator' and the password
used in the installation of Windows XP (if you're using XP
Professional).

You will be logged on as the administrator. Go then to Control Panel
User accounts and create an account with the name you want,
belonging to the administrator group.

Good luck

there is an admin account on your machine, tho you may have forgotten its
name and/or the password. XP will NOT permit you (or anyone) to delete
the last account that has admin privledges - it always leaves at least
one. Now, if you don't remember it, or its password, you are SOL.

by default there is an account named "Administrator" (note the
spelling/capitalization), and it has a password that you assigned to it
when you did the original install; did you write it down like setup told
you to? It will not show up on the "Welcome Screen" (unless you tweaked
it to). did you delete that specific account? if so you did it from
an(other) account that had admin privledge. THERE IS ALWAYS ONE TO RULE
THEM ALL!

If you did not delete that account, and you remember its password (which
CAN be blank) you can try logging in to it by presing crtl-alt-delete
TWICE at the welcome screen - that'll bring up the plain ole "login
dialog" where you can enter any valid account name w/ its password.

Do you know of a neigborhood kid who's a bit of a hacker? Good luck....

The admin account that comes with XP can only be renamed or disabled. It
can not be deleted. This goes the same for the guest account wich should be
disabled.

It is a god idea to rename the built in admin account something other than
administrator and keep the new name and password in a safe place.

You can set up auditing and audit success and failure of the newly named
built in admin account to see if any one has logged on with it.

Change the name and password periodically.

Simply log in using the built-in Administrator account and modify
the desired account.

By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of
WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard
login dialog box.

As you don't say what version of XP you have, do the following:
In Home edition, boot into Safe Mode and log on as Administrator.
In Pro, at the Welcome Screen, press Ctl-Alt-Del twice and type in
"Administrator" in the username box. (In both cases lave the password field
blank unless you know otherwise). When logged-on, you can create a new User
with Admin rights.

BTW, you CANNOT remove the in-built Administrator account AFAIK.

Hi,

luke i have done the same ,accidently removed my administrator acct, have you resolved this, if so can you help i'm desperate

Go to Start > Run > control userpasswords2
If you have a password, it will ask for it.
Select your account
Click properties, go to the second tab
select others, in the dropdown menu select administrators.
OK your way out.
This should give the account you're using administrative privileges.

Hope this helps

You can only do this if you are already logged in with Admin rights
AFAIK......

Hi,

AFAIK......
If you're logged as a limited user, a window comes up asking for the
name of an user with administrative privileges and the password, then
the program comes up.

However, I realize now that in the context of the OP you're right, if
he has no account with administrative privileges then he won't be able
to use this applet.

Hi Gordon
