I just did a complete REPAIR on Windows XP. Everything seems to be back,
but when I try to access Microsoft Update on their web site, Explorer locks
and I can't get in. I need to us ctrl-alt-del just Explorer to close.

What do I do now?

Should I install SP 2 (I downloaded it earlier "just in case"?

Thank you.

If your repair has put the system back to pre-SP2, then yes, you should apply SP2.

Obviously a lockup of IE is abnormal. You need to do some digging around.

Need for you to review the log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Thank you. I found something that says: Internet Access Update Disabled.

I don't remember disabling it; but how do I enable it?

Thank you.

Make that: Windows Update Access Disabled.

Same questions.

Post back the exact lines & text around that message.

If running Windows XP or higher, You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled and running:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left; and status "Running" on the far right.

To enable windows Automatic Update, go to START, Control Panel, Security
Center

Windows Updates is the send item (in XP Professional). Configure this
as you wish.

MSCONFIG Services checks out OK. Everything including what you asked is
green.

This is the relevant windows log text:

Actually, it says Windows Update access disabled: No

So maybe this isn't the problem.

Still need help.

It says that the Security Center was stopped and is not running.

What stopped it? How do I start it?

Thank you.

From Windows Start menu, select RUN, then type in

SERVICES.MSC <Enter>

Once in there, scroll down the list and look for "Security Center".
Then click on it.
It's status should say "Started". If it does not, look at the Start link at top left, and click to start.
Check to see that it's Startup type is Automatic.

btw, not having Security center on will not have an effect on access to windows update.
