Hello, newsgroup.

System Windows XP; Service Pack 2.

I've an office LAN without domain --just workgroup-- working fine. We've
bought a new laptop and I can't hang it into my corporate Windows network.

TCP/IP is working good, I can download email and browse the web through
my local Gateway. Even can administrate the notebook remotelly using
UltraVNC. Of course I can ping another boxes.

But I can't access disk and printer shares on the local network. I am
attached to the local workgroup, can see the tree containing all the
networked PCs but everytime I want to browse one of them for shared
folders I get a non-privileged message and can't access them.

This messages shows up under an administrator and normal user.
The firewall is up and as I said above, allows me to browse internet and
use remote administration tools.

What else do I have to check?

Thanks in advance.

Gabriel,

There are many possible reasons for an "access denied" aka "error 5" message.
One of the most common causes would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall, or other security component. There are several other possibilities
too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open
mind.

You might want to look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks, Chuck.

An IT Service guy came to the office and deleted the following registry
entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT_CONTROL\SET\SERVICES\NETBT\PARAMETERS\
DhcpNodeType

and every thing went OK.

Thanks for the update, Gabriel.

Chuck,

The same machine now is having trouble connecting to TCP/IP networks
over a wireless link.

Perhaps some registry tweaking again...?

Well, Gabriel,

The diagnosis "trouble connecting" could encompass a multitude of problems.
Let's look at the previously recommended diagnostic tools. For minimum of 3
computers.
