The drives and drivers work properly, but I only get the "invalid function"
error message when trying to access these drives. They are listed in "My
Computer" and Word, but I cannot open them.

I have disabled Norton and the other firewall program I have and it hasn't
helped. Any other suggestions

Look in the event viewer for any error message that might be associated
with the action and post it here.

Is D: your CD/DVD Rom drive? Are they accessible in Safe Mode?

I too have experinced the same problem with the same error message. Both
drives are working. The computer can be booted using a Windows ME boot
floppy. It is then possible to run DIR commands on the CD drive once a CD
has been placed in it.
