Hi All,
A very heavy cyan-ish colored tint on all scans, regardless of
color.
Contacted Canon... they replied:

Regrettably, this issue will require the scanner to be
serviced.

Does anyone know exactly what it is that needs to be serviced? If so,
is this something I could do myself? The scanner is no longer covered
by warranty, and I am fairly comfortable in the tinkerings of
electronics. If I end up killing it altogether, I won't lose any
sleep... there's just no way I'm going to pay to have this thing
serviced :!:

Thanks in advance, Dick

I have a D1250 that I only paid $50 for. Hardly worth sending to service.

The cheapest thing to try with scanners is cleaning and changing the bulb.
Wayne Fulton provides some tips on both:
http://www.scantips.com/faq1.html#lamp
http://www.scantips.com/faq3.html#clean

Thanks for the 411... on the site that you linked to, the author
mentions the power supply to the lamp as a possible culprit; what can
one do to check/ fix/ replace this? Doesn't look like replacing the
lamp element is an option, as it is cold cathode.

Thanks again, Dick

Your 1230 (UK) and my 1250 are bottom-line scanners.
The 1250 is not even available in the US any longer. In fact, when I bought
mine in December of 2003, it was the only one on the shelf and I did not see
it in other stores selling similar equipment.

For the time, effort and expense of finding a source to test and/or replace
the power supply, you could easily buy another scanner.
Similar Cannon models are the LIDE 20, 30 or 50, however from what I've seen
mentioned here, even those are getting difficult to find.
The LIDE35 shown here (UK)
http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/scanners/flatbed/index.asp
Would be similar and newer than your 1230.

In the US, the LIDE35
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=104
is reatailed at $79 (likley less expensive at some discount stores.)
