I just installed Office 2003 as a complete install over
Office XP and I am now having trouble using Word as my
email editor in Outlook. I can get it to work if I run
Word 2003 first by itself and then try to open an email.
If I do not run Word first I get the following error:

"Microsoft Word is set to be your e-mail editor.
However, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not
the same version as Outlook. The Outlook e-mail editor
will be used instead. The program for the attachment may
not have been installed properly or may have been moved
or deleted. Reinstall the program in which the
attachment was created."

If I run Word first, Outlook is then able to use Word as
the editor until I close and open Outlook again. I don't
have a clue what is causing that. I have tried to do a
repair installation already to no avail. Thanks for your
help.

Check your task manager for any orphaned instances of WINWORD.EXE -- under
the "processes" tab. Kill those processes and then retry and it should
work.

Note: killing processes can be hazardous so do so with caution and with
your files properly backed up.

Dwayne-
Thank you for you help. This appears to have done the
trick. Word can now be started from Outlook without any
special tricks. I am just confused as to why rebooting
the computer would not have killed this orphaned instance
in the first place. Thanks again. -Philip
