cannot use application

I can open documents in all Office applications but I cannot use the
application. All the buttons on the toolbars are inactive. Any
recommendations would be greatly appreciated
 
We've encountered this problem at our law firm (about 200 users) using Office
XP and Windows XP. Although we haven't discovered a solution... & any
suggestions for a cure would be great... we have found a work-around. If you
hit Ctrl-P (which brings up the Print dialog), then hit cancel, the toolbars
will start responding.

This seems to be quite random and very intermittent. But we at the Help Desk
get about 1 call a day from someone about it.
