On 5/6/05 I reconnected my computer to the internet after being disconnected
from it for the past several months. I have an HP Pavillion 876XL with an
AMD Celeron processor at 1200 mHz Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Release 6.0.D. I have
multiple boot sectors including Windows ME which came with this computer,
Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional both of which I
purchased later.

I have had my computer setup to boot to Windows XP but can choose to boot in
Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Recovery Console also.

I realized after I did the Windows "Automatic Update", which I had done
several times before without problems, that there were problems with the
Celeron processors and Windows XP SP2.

I have tried to use the $NTservicepackuninstall$ utility in Recovery Console
but get an "access denied" message when running the batch spuninst.txt
utility. I have also tried to uninstall by booting up windows 2000 but
cannot find the winxpsp2 folder described in the instructions. I have also
tried to look for a BIOS update that I can obtain but have not been able to
locate this so far. I won't have access to my original Windows XP
Professional Disk for another week since I am away from my home on business.

Can you offer any suggestions?

Have you looked in Control Panel; Add/remove programs? I have found it (and
removed it) that way.

Hi,

1) A celeron is an Intel processor, not an AMD. Your system uses an AMD
Athlon (thunderbird series).

2) The issues with SP2 were not with the celeron line, but rather with Intel
Prescott's.

3) BIOS update for your model:

4) "Access denied" is usually indicitive of an ownership problem, see:

I can only boot up with windows 2000 and am unable to find it in Control
Panel add/remove programs folder. All of these seem to be related to my
windows 2000 updates.

How do you expect to find a service pack to remove for WinXP from within
a Win2K OS?

Read the following article under workaround method 2

Let me know if I have misread it.

You said that you can only boot into Win2K and cannot find XP Service
Pack 2 in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. That's because it does
not exist in the Win2K Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. It would
only be in the Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs for the XP
installation.

Maybe I misunderstand what you are _intending_ to say but that _is_ what
you said:

"I can only boot up with windows 2000 and am unable to find it in Control

I realize that it will not appear in control panel when booted in Win2K. My
remark was in response to Andrew's comment.

I have multiple boot choices for my computer, but now I cannot boot up XP
Professional in any mode since performing my last automatic update on
05/06/05. The initial XP logo screen will come on during the boot, but then
the screen will go blank and the computer hangs up.

The article I pointed out suggests several methods of working around this
problem, which I have tried but have not been successful yet. I appreciate
any suggestions you may have to offer.

Yeah, I know, but the way you wrote it seemed like you were expecting it
to be found there.

The only thing I could suggest at this point would be a repair install
of XP and of course backup data first. Someone else may have a different
solution.

Here's a good place to start concerning repair installs:
