I completely screwed up...I uninstalled Kazaa and did a disk cleanup and
defragmented. When I restarted I went through a chkdsk and got a bunch of
unreadable files. Now I am not able to system restore, I can get to the
restore date, but when I click "next" nothing happens... none of my microsoft
programs are working, I get a "the specified module cannot be found" msg for
email and when I try to use word, nothing happens. I tried to reinstall
windows xp but it will not allow me to because of updates. Is there ANYTHING
I can do without losing all of my programs (power point etc).

I'm not able to reinstall because of updates. I tried to restore in safe
mode and I have the same problem. Also, media player works, but I cannot get
any sound or pictures off of outlook express...can I pull my hair out
now?!?!?!

can you uninstall office and then reinstall it...you will have to get the
updates after that of course. does your IE work ok?

Internet works fine...but if I reinstall office, that won't fix my restore
problem, will it? If I turned off restore and turned it back on, will I be
able to restore to an earlier date?

I tried and I get the same thing...absolutely nothing. I can hit next, but
it dosen't do anything....

So System Restore is starting, but it will not go past the initial page,
is that correct?

I can get to the date part but when I click "next", I get the hourglass and
then it stops...the page dosen't change.

I ran a spyware check and nothing was found. Would you suggest that I turn
off the restore then restart it? Will I be able to restore the system back to
before this problem?

Also, I tried to download the AutoStreamer in order to "fix" microsoft office
and I get the error msg "this application has failed to start because
msi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"....

For known infected systmems. I turn off system restore which will remove
all previous restore points, which are infected anyway, so why waste
time tryiing to scan them.

I would like to try and reinstall XP first, hoping that I will not lose info
and maybe it will "fix" itself...but again, when I try to download
autostreamer I get the msi.dll error message. Is there anything I can do to
fix that? Also, if I turn off sys restore, what will it restore to? What
exactly does the restore to last good configuration do? Thanks in advance....
