Cannot startup

Sorry for the double post, but I just remembered: I have a copy of
wpa.dbl from another computer. Is it possible to use that copy instead
to startup?
 
NO. You can not backup or restore th XP license/activation files. You
would probabily need to do a repair reinstall on top of he installed
version in order for the license/activation files to be reset. Then,
it is just a matter of get the XP re-activated easily (by phone.)

However, you do need an installation CD of your XP and not a recovery
CD.

But can you use an i386 folder to replace the activation files?
Microsoft's KB article 306081 says:
· expand licwmi.dl_ %systemroot%\system32
· expand regwizc.dl_ %systemroot%\system32
· expand licdll.dl_ %systemroot%\system32
· expand wpabaln.ex_ %systemroot%\system32
· expand wpa.db_ %systemroot%\system32
· expand actshell.ht_ %systemroot%\system32
· copy pidgen.dll %systemroot%\system32
I have those files on my computer at home.

My computer refuses to boot. It just comes up with this error:

for this computer. Error Code:| |0x80004005

i don't have a backup copy of wpa.dbl and can't boot into Safe Mode to
use System Restore. I can only start up from my BartPE CD. The system
is currently connected to the Internet, but I don't have a install CD
or an i386 folder. Please help!

Thanks for those articles, but as I said, I don't have an install CD,
so KB 306081 won't help.
KB 328874 probably won't help either, but you never know. I loaded KB
914232 in Firefox, and it refuses to let me see the page contents for
the 0x80004005 error. A problem?

With 914232 open in FF, you can scroll down and read:

Error code 0x80004005
This problem may occur if a file that the Windows Product Activation (WPA)
requires is damaged or missing. This behavior occurs if one or both of the
following conditions are true:

• A third-party backup utility or an antivirus program interferes with the
installation of Windows XP.
• A file that WPA requires is manually modified.

Subjectively judging from a reply you made today to another thread in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support newsgroup*, I would hazard to
suspect that you lnow you have a pirated version of WinXP and have tried to
fudge a workaround to avoid WPA or WGA.

If this is not the case, I suggest you take the machine to a local shop.
