all of a sudden, I cannot get my laptop to start up. I'm
getting a message "we apologize for the inconvenience, but
windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or
software change might have caused this". I'm given a
choice of the following startup attempts: "safe mode"
or "safe mode with networking" or "safe mode with command
prompt" or "last known good configuration" or "start
windows normally". Whichever one I choose, nothing
works!! Does anyone know what's happened here?? Is there a
solution?? My laptop is part of a home network connected
to AOL. Very frustrating!!

First, did you install any new hardware or software? If so try removing it.
You could also try reinstalling Win XP over itself if you tried everything
else, this may fix the problem.
