Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze.

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click OK | Close Services |
Reboot

[[ Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine ]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Hi Ramesh,

Defrag was messed up for me a while back.

This fix worked for me. dfrgntfs.exe was crashing. Both from defrag.exe in
a command prompt and dfrg.msc.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

I did not have to do this part.

Navigate to...
%windir%\inf\ | Right click dfrg.inf | Select Install

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Yup, Wes. The snap-in problems are fixed using the two commands.
Reinstallation of dfrg.inf is not usually needed, it mainly fixes the
defragpath in the registry.

Hi Ramesh,

What amazed me was that I did not have a 3rd party defrag program. I still
don't have one. The removal of a 3rd party defrag program is what usually
screws that up.

Yes. It's weird, Wes. I know you don't even use a registry cleaning program,
do you?

As a matter of fact I do use Easy Cleaner, Ramesh.

http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

It's possible that I screwed something up with EasyCleaner, but I doubt that
I did. ;-)

The last thing I screwed up with EasyCleaner was deleting
%AllUsersprofile%\Application
Data\Microsoft\Money\12.0\Webcache\insider.bak. That was over three years
ago. I had to re-install Money.
