I cannot shut down my pc, running winXP. Whenever I click
on the red "turn off computer" button, the PC goes
through the motions but then shows the "blue screen of
death".

The message is as follows:

STOP:
0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF721CEE2, 0XF7AE0A08,
0XF7AE0708)

USR1806V.SYS ADDRESS F721CEE2 base at F7214000,
Datestamp 3b05773b

Thank you for your help, anyone!

Hopefully, you'll encounter few STOP errors in your computing endeavors.
When you do comes across a STOP error, the key pieces of information to know
are:

1. The hexadecimal number after the word STOP: In your case this is
0X0000007E (also known as 0x7E); and
2. The title of the error, which is displayed in caps and underscores and
LOOKS_LIKE_THIS

The other 4 parameters (0XC0000005, etc.) vary with different errors and can
sometimes be helpful in narrowing down the source of the problem. It's also
sometimes helpful to know the name of the file which brought Windows down,
which in your case is usr1806v.sys.

Armed with this information, you are well on your way to diagnosing your
problem (or rather, your computer's problem.) Your first step is to search
the Internet with the two key pieces of information shown above. In your
case, an 0x7E error is caused by problematic or incompatible hardware or a
problematic or incompatible driver. The culprit in your case is
usr1806v.sys, which a search of the Internet reveals is a driver for a U.S.
Robotics modem.

Ted,

Thanks a million! I have contacted USR through their
support link on their site.

Lets see what they come up with.

Regards,

Manny

My pleasure. Hope U.S. Robotics can help. It's probably something as simple
as re-installing the driver.

Any file on a computer can become damaged through no fault of your own. I
suppose if I was being thrown around inside a microprocessor I would
eventually suffer some damage as well.
