I too cannot send emails. I'm visiting my daughter, using a WI-FI
connection. I am able to recieve but not send and I'm getting a similar error
message as jfoote. The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Email
test', Account: '****** *******', Server: 'smtphm.sympatico.ca', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number:

Account: ****** *******

These are both Canadian Bell Canada Sympatico accounts.(Sympatico uses different pop
and smtp addresses depending on location in country) Disable your email scanning by
your Anti Virus by deleting the AV and then re-installing it without the email
integration (scanning). When done try the email. Post back with result. DO NOT just
disable the scanning feature but do as I posted above because just using disable
will not always work..

You either need to authenticate the smtp server in your email account
settings, or temporarily change the smtp server to the one that corresponds
to the ISP your daughter uses...

Obviously, there is no mail server named smtp.*******.ca.
If you have purposely munged the mail server name, that limits our
ability to troubleshoot the issue.

Stabbing in the dark here, I'm guessing that the SMTP server you
are attempting to use does not belong to your ISP. As such, your
home ISP will block your use of any port 25 SMTP server other than
their own. For an explanation of this policy, see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

To send from home, you will have to substitute your home ISP's
SMTP server. If you need help with that, let us know who your
home ISP is.

What you experienced is normal. As a general rule, the owner of
the SMTP server must be the same as the one providing your Internet
connection at that moment. For more on this see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route,
I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: update', Account:

Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

So you are connected to another network (not Sympatico), and it won't let
you send using Sympatico's SMTP server.

Some options are:
1. See if Sympatico offers an authenticated email server, using a port other
than 25. It doesn't appear that they do.
2. Use Sympatico's webmail to send.

3. Use the SMTP server of your daughter's ISP to send email
4. Get a Gmail account, and use their server for outgoing messages.

Thank you very much for all of your suggestions. Now that I know what the problem is I'll work on a solution and post the results.
