i can recieve mail fine but when i send a mail it never reaches its
destination. if i send it to myself it gets through but if i send it to
another address its not going out over the internet. i'm with aol and
imputing smtp.aol.com and using 587 as my port. theres no error messages and
its as though its sent it but never gets there. i've phoned aol and they've
said contact microsoft
has anyone got any ideas

How do you know the message is not being sent out?
In view of the fact that you receive a message sent to yourself,
I would have to conclude that the messages do go out.
If a copy of the outgoing message is deposited in the Sent Items folder,
it means your Windows Mail got a confirmation from the SMTP server
that the message was sent out successfully.
The main reason a message may not be received by the recipient is
because of a spam filter at the recipient's end, either on his computer
or on his incoming mail server.

One thing you might try is using a different SMTP server, since some
receiving servers consider AOL mail to be spam. You can get a free
Gmail account, and then use the smtp.gmail.com server for sending.

i know they has'nt got there because i'm sending them to work and friends, if
i send direct from aol it i.e on line, it reaches its destination.

Thanks for confirming that the sent emails do not arrive.
However, that doesn't change my analysis of the reason for
why that is happening. Your Windows Mail is not at fault.
Email sent through the web interface use a different server
than email sent through the SMTP server, which results in
different treatment from spam filters on destination servers.

do still keep my aol address?

sorry to be pain but i'm not the best at computers, ive set up a gmail
account how do i link it up with my aol address and how do i set windows mail
up to use this?

thanks mate for all your help buts its doing exactly the same, saying its
sent and putting it into sent items as though its been sent but not getting
to its destination

Well, you have me stumped. Without an error message or non-delivery
notice, it is almost impossible to determine the reason for a message
not reaching its destination.

Gary,

I have the same problem, but can add to the information. If you send an
email to any external address and CC yoursenlf it will not get through. If
you just send it to yourself on AOL it gets through fine. I am assuming it
uses a different SMTP server for AOL addresses, but that is as far as I can
get.....

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes AOL, and I can confirm the settings are correct (using SMTP.aol.com and
server 587).

I have been playing with it for a few hours now and found the following (by
bouncing emails between my work Email account and back):

- All incoming EMail is fine.
- All replys to any email is fine.
- When sending newly created Emails, any that have an external (non AOL)
address on To: or Cc: will not get through to any address (including AOL
addresses).
- I can send a newly created EMail to my own AOL address fine.

In Windows Mail it records as if the Email was sent (goes into Outbox, and
then to Sent items), but in AOL it is as if the EMail doesn't exist (not in
any Sent folder or Spam box).

I have tried turning off the Email security (in Norton), it makes no
difference.

I don't store any emails on AOL, so its not a capacity problem.

I do use an iPhone as well, which can send and recieve emails on this
account without a problem, although I do not use the SMTP.AOL.COM server to
send with, I use the AT&T one. (Not sure why, but it never worked with the
AOL one).

Any help greatfully recieved!!

(I am now trying your previous solution and setting up a GMail account).

Thanks.

Ian.

Norton Antivirus 2008 (and earlier) is among the top three troublemakers
for Windows Mail. Strange symptoms often don't surface until several
months have gone by, or until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Several users here have reported that Symantec will give you a free
upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2009, which cures many problems. If
interested, contact Symantec via online chat.

In a worst case scenario, you may have to uninstall Norton, followed by
using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
