hey folks, just wondering if anyone has any ideas for why windows mail
is preventing me from sending mail. it is currently linked to my Yahoo
(UK) pop3 account, and it works for receiving mail, but i cannot send
any messages. any tips? i've been incontact with Yahoo Cust. services
and they said that it worked and they could receive my messages to
them, but it doesn't work, then they said it was a mail client
provider problem. hopefully you can understand that! lol. thanks for
any help, michael

Hi Michael

POP3 is the protocol used for receiving email but have you checked your SMTP
settings?
SMTP is the protocol used for sending email. These details must be correct
or you will not be able to send email.
Check with your isp (internet server provider) for confirmation of what the
SMTP server details are and also what port is being used for sending email.

Be aware that you will need to have the SMTP settings of your isp for
sending your Yahoo email because you're using your isp's email server to
send the email and not Yahoo.

See here for how to set up a yahoo.co.uk account under Windows
Mail:

The instructions were written for Outlook Express, but should also
work under Windows Mail.

Hi Gary

I have several email accounts that I have aquired over the years all with
different providers.
I use Outlook as my email client to download and send email from all the
email accounts however, I have to use the SMTP settings of my current isp
provider in order to successfully send email as it's their broadband service
that I'm connecting to to send mail. It was my isp (Sky) that advised me of
this.

I personally don't have a Yahoo account and I am of course, guessing that
Michael's problem with sending mail could be down to this type of issue if
Yahoo is not the same isp that he may be using to connect to his dial up or
broadband service. However, I mentioned it because in my experinence, I come
across this alot when troubleshooting users email issues.

Angie, do you have an official Yahoo cite for that statement?
It appears to be contrary to Yahoo's published information at

Yes, your advice is appropriate for SMTP servers using port 25.
Some of the more progressive mail providers use traveler-friendly
SMTP ports such as 465, which will work anywhere, regardless
of one's ISP or Internet connection source.
