Hi, I am unable to send mail, there are no attachments and email scanning
for viruses is turned off. I get the error below, any ideas.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: Message from eBay Member Regarding Item
#170076449138', Account: 'Orange', Server: 'smtp.orange.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

This is usually caused by an anti-spam program or an anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6d4e006aaa94/4ba5fc8ef939c44c88256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

I can sometimes send a message and sometimes not at all. I also have
problems receiving mail. I get the following message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'netzero.net'. Subject 'Re: ski trip',
Account: 'pop.netzero.net', Server: 'authsmtp.netzero.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '553 Domain name required', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Please advise.

It's a quick and dirty guess, but in this case it appears that you may not
have included a domain name in the recipient's mail address. "john_smith"
or john_smith@somewhere instead of (e-mail address removed)", for example.

Are you connected through Orange?
Make sure your settings for outgoing mail are as they prescribe.

I think you should contact Orange. I tried pinging smtp.orange.net and the
request timed out.

Hi Tony
I just bought a new computer with Windows Vista and have the same problems
with sending emails although I can actually receive them. I just noticed
your Q but don't seem to be able to find any replies. Did you receive any
advice and if so, would you please let me know what to do? I would be really
grateful.
Many thanks

Actually, yours is the ninth post in this thread.
I reviewed the replies, but no one pointed out that his smtp server name was
wrong. According to his ISP it should be smtp.orangehome.co.uk.

"I was having the same problem so I went a rechecked my settings. My email
started sending after a selected "My server requires authentication" under
the email account properties and the tab "servers"

Also make sure under tools>account>mail tab> (select ur account double click
it) servers tab> tick of below password(Log on using secure password
authentication)

thank you
