Does your connection to smtp.telus.net go through any other internet
provider's equipment before it gets to telus.net? If so, connections to
port 25
are often blocked to cause problems for spammers. You might ask telus.net
if their outgoing email server listens to any port other than port 25 for
outgoing mail, and if so, whether you need to change anything other than the
port number to use it.

Before you get Telus involved (and I don't think they will help),
check your antivirus software.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Edit your acount from the tools menu. If you are loggin in with secure
passport on, try to turn it of. Sorry for my bad english. I am from Norway ;-)

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before it reaches the server? If so, such
connections
to port 25 are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.

You might also want to check your setup:
