Starting Monday, I have been unable to send emails. I have used this
computer for 2 years, and have had no issues.

Here is the message

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: How are you doing on
GOALS?!', Account: 'mail.gl.centurytel.net', Server:
'smtpauth.centurytel.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket
Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Turn off the SSL option. You can do so by going to
Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced.

I did that and still get the same message

I have contacted my ISP and they say it is a microsoft issue. Have there
been a recent update that may have done this?

Thanks

I have also contacted my ISP and they could not help me. I used to send out
OK but now it is not working again. I am away from home using a AT&T aircard.
Mine works OK at home.

OK, I had to eliminate that possibility first. The only remaining
possibility for that problem is interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

I filled in the outgoing mail with info from the server that I am using to
sent my mail with, this worked. It is done differently on XP and Vista.

ok, I upgraded to Windows Live email. Still getting the same message, but
different format.

The connection to the server has failed.

Under "Outgoing Mail Server" check the box next to "My server requires
authentication".

If you are certain that your Internet connection is coming from CenturyTel,
then the only remaining cause is your antivirus. Which one is it?

If you can't send when away from home, what you experienced is normal.
As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server you are using must be the
same as the provider of your Internet connection at that moment. For more
on this see http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit
tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.
