Cannot select desktop icons

My XP desktop will not let me select icons. I have to
hover the mouse pointer over the icon for a few seconds,
then the icon is highlighted, then I have to right click -
open. If I go through Explorer, I can open files on

the desktop no problem, it is just a hassle.

Any help apreciated.

Any and all.
I've got a few excel, word, & pdf. A zipped file, and 1
or 2 mp3s. I also cannot open the recyle bin, my
documents, etc.

Also, at first you mentioned that you had to hover, now you are saying
can't. Is it both? Or is the recycle bin a separate issue?
