I have just started getting a problem where I want to re-
name a
a .avi file and it won't let me, a message come up
saying 'cannot rename, it is being used by another person
or program' this happens when I first turn my computer on
and cannot figure out what it is and how to fix it, any
help most welcome.
Thanks, Zetor

Hi

Can you rename it in Safe Mode? If not try this:

Open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab and find 'explorer.exe', highlight it and then click on 'End Process' - keep Task Manager open. Try and rename the file. You will then have to go back to Task Manager, click on File>New Task and type in 'explorer.exe' -without the quotes.

Is this before or after it has been opened by the application with which it
is associated ? I have the same problem AFTER I've opened something even
though the program has been closed. Thing that works for me is a restart of
the computer. Personal preference: I shut it down at night and wait until
bootup next day to rename a problem file.

This is the (known) problem where explorer 'opens' a .avi file in order
to get more information about it, and frequently forgets/fails to close
it. Some other media files are similarly afflicted, but .avis seem to be
the worst, especially those with encodings which MS didn't know about
when WinXP was written.
