Cannot Record from my Microphone

Attempting to record a narration to a slideshow, I discovered my microphone
would not work.
I located the Sound Hardware Test Wizard which checked the software and
displayed the Test Dialogue box.
However, I could not record anything and was told that I could not complete
the Sound Hardware Test.
I have borrowed another mike which is known to be working, but with exactly
the same results after repeated attempts.
I have checked I am using the correct (ASUS mobo pink) socket but have now
run out of ideas.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be - and how to cure it ?

Jim.

Check it with the volume control.
start/run, type :
sndvol32
see Options menu, Properties , scroll down to put a check in Microphone, and
'OK'.
The control will now allow a dot in 'recording', 'OK'
The control will display the Mic, with a slider and 'mute' checkbox.

Thanks, Mark but no real help on this occasion as my mike slider was already
checked as 'selected'.
Also, I was taken thru this procedure yesterday while doing the Sound
Hardware Tests.
I have today downloaded and installed two updated drivers for the Realtek
ALC655 AC '97 audio but still without success using the Sound Hardware Test
Wizard. Both mikes remain 'dead'. Any other thoughts?
I desperately need to use this microphone....

Jim.

Hi Mark. Thanks for that, but in the meantime I located a spare PCI audio
card and, after installing it and making it the default, I seem to have
overcome the problem.

Thank you for all your help.

Jim
