Joe K.

When I click the Send/Receive button I get the following error message:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.earthlink.net', Server:
'pop.earthlink.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

I have made sure all the server settings are correct and I just spent an
hour in chat with Earthlink tech support who made sure there was no issue
with settings or with the anti-virus program.

They told me the error was due to missing files.

What now?

Has this account ever working in Windows Mail, Joe?

That error usually connotes (temporary) problems on the mailserver's end.

Is you anti-virus application configured to scan incoming/outgoing mail?

Until today the email program has been working properly.
The AVG anti-virus does scan incoming emails but that has never beenan issue.
This is a new problem that just arose this morning.

Further clarification:
The contents of my INBOX are missing when I open Window Mail.
All other folders are intact and.

AVG's email scanning module can cause problems with Windows Mail.
Uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

Thanks, Gary.
I just tried opening Windows Mail once again with the AVG email scan turned
off.
I didn't do a full uninstall/reinstall, but was able to turn off the scan
thru the AVG interface.
Got the same result, same error message.

Assuming it's AVG (Free) v8.0 (since v7.5 is no longer supported), now try
uninstalling AVG, rebooting twice, and then reinstalling it...doing a Custom
install and opting-out of installing either of the email scanning
components. (Yes, there are two of them.)

To do a Custom reinstall without installing LinkScanner:

1. Download a fresh copy of the installer, saving it to your C: drive (i.e,
C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_176a1400.exe) =>
http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe or
http://www.avg.com/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_176a1400.exe

2. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed,
properly configured, and updated!

3. Carefully follow these instructions to do a Custom install AVG 8.0:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338

Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email
scanners. Email Scanning provides no additional protection, it's a major
source of corruption and problems in most (Windows) Mail Clients.

4. Configure AVG as you wish via the User Interface: Tools | Advanced
settings.

5. Check for and install any available updates.

[Better yet, uninstall AVG and do a custom install of Avira AntiVir without
the email scanning component(s).]
