We have some excel files with macros, pivot tables and
more store on our 2000 server. Now Every now and then one
file becomes unreadable. I try to open it and it goes
through the steps of asking about macros and entering the
password but after that is says that it cannot read the
file. Now all of these files are based off the same
template. I cannot find a common thread as to why this
has only happened to a few of the files.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes bad things happen to excel files.

And sometimes good people do bad things to excel files. One way this message
could appear is if someone opened the excel file in MSWord. Then saved it as an
MSWord file (with an extension of .xls).

You may want to try opening in MSWord to see if that opens it. If it does,
you'll want to use the backup version. (And find out who did it to ask them not
to do this!)

And if you have xl2002 available, it has a better reputation opening files that
earlier version couldn't
and OpenOffice has the same reputation (I've never used it, though).

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

I've never used this either, but you might want to check into:

A long time ago, someone complained about corrupted files on a network share.
They reported that it was a defective Network Interface Card:

(one line in your browser)

They traced it back to a single pc that was corrupting the workbooks. Sounds
like lots of detective work to me.

Good luck,
