I recently installed an NEC ND1300 DVD+/- RW Burner. The
DVD MovieFactory 2 software that came with it did not
include an application to just burn data files for backup
so I downloaded Burn4Free which recognized the DVD+R disk
with 4.7MB of space and appeared to burn the data
successfully using a DVD_R disk. Unfortunately, when I try
to access the DVD+R disk using explorer no files are
displayed and it recognizes the disk drive as CD, not DVD.
When I eject the disk explorer does recognize the drive as
DVD-R. Is XP able to read data from DVD+R disks? I would
appreciate any direction.

XP shouldnt be the problem, does that burn4free program
need registering? it might have done a "TEST BURN", check
the DVD (look at it physically) and see if anything was
writtin. you should see a different color then what it
was normally.

also check the manufacturers website for any newer
drivers then the ones it came with.

Some writing software is intended only to write music in a format compatible
with stand-alone CD players. That would not work for data files. Look for
some option or setting or preference that controls the CD (or DVD) format.
The most common format for data disks is called Joliet, and Explorer can
read that. Another format is UDF, bit that is more limited. I accidentally
wrote a DVD-RW in UDF and found that explorer could not read past the fourth
level of subdirectories. ISO9660 is an older format that does not support
long file names.

Finally, get a program called ISOBUSTER, which among other things can read
CDs and DVDs without using windows explorer. This can be used to determine
what is really on the CD and what forat it is.

Thanks for the responses. I downloaded the IsoBuster
software and was able to see all the data files I burned
onto the DVD+R disk. To open the data files I must first
extract them from the DVD+R to my hard drive. I was hoping
to be able to open them right from the DVD+R disk, just
like you can open files from a CD-R (you know MS Word,
Access, .mdb, .mpg, .avi's, .txt, etc.) Do you know if
this is a limitation of XP reading data from a DVD+R disk
versus a DVD-RAM disk? Any help?
