I bought new laptop computer. When I insert CD in the drive it don't
recognize it. It says insert cd. Can anyone tell me why it is not recognizing?

what you mean formatted?

what happens if you put in a data CD ? ie one with data on it ? or a msuic
CD?

I cannot believe this. You have a computer and do not know formated? That is
almost as bad as delete *.*. That will ruin your day.

Sounds like the cD drive on your new laptop computer was dead on arrival.

Brand new computer, try different CDs. If none of them work, take it
back. Otherwise determine what is different about the CD that doesn't work.

It is new formatted CD. If I put in my office computer it reads ok.

CDR/RW need to be formatted only if you intended to use the disk with a
packet writing {UDF} application. If you formatted the CD at work on a
computer that has a packet writing application then:

a. Your home computer is using native Windows XP which does not support
packet writing.
b. Your home computer has a third party application that supports packet
writing that is not compatible with the packet writing application at your
office. One of the problems with UDF is that the formats can vary with
manufacturer.
