Cannot play DVDs since installing XP Pro

I recently bought a Toshiba laptop that had the home edition of XP installed
on it. I then had XP Professional installed. Since then, I can no longer
play a DVD. When using Windows Media Player, the DVD disk is recognized, the
track and title info appears on the player's skin and appears to be playing,
but there is no video or sound.

Any ideas on what I must do? Toshiba claims it is a Microsoft issue since I
loaded XP Pro on the PC.

Please advise

In addition to Carey's good advice, let me add that Toshiba didn't help you
because they did not install XP Pro on your computer.

Sounds like you did not install the proper drivers for the video card
installed on your laptop, and are using the WinXP generic drivers (always a
bad idea). Visit the Toshiba website and download the drivers for your make
an model of video card/chip.

As a side note; Toshiba is not obligated to provide support for an OS that
they did not install. If you change your OS, you should always search for
and download the appropriate drivers for all your hardware prior to
installation. Microsoft did not make your video card/chip, so they are not
obligated to help you. You made the decision to change to WinXP Pro, so it
is up to you to deal with the issues that it creates.

I am not able to change the setting to hardware. The setting is on
software, both both are grey and non-selectable for Preferred
decoder. Any ideas?

Your laptop has a hardware DVD decoder. The hardware decoder is
installed, all the apps expect it to work, but you do not have the
decoder driver that was installed with the OEM Toshiba XP-Home. Go to
the support page at Toshiba, look through the drivers, and find the
hardware DVD decoder driver, or find it in the i386 folder, or other
folder, in the OEM XP Home CD. Alternatively, reinstall the original XP
Home, copy the installed i386 folder to CD, and use it as the source for
loading the driver on the new XP Pro - at least I believe this can be
done.
