cannot play .avi files in windows media player

i can't play .avi files in windows media player. it is
selected in the files type tab in windows media player
but i still can't play them. if anyone know how i can
solve this problem i would very much appreciate it.
 
I had same problem. Dowbload DIVX bundle. Free. Your
download will show in )temp), I assume, where you right
click on it and open with......................DIVX
player. Kind of a pain but works. DA
