I cannot open hyperlinks coming to me from PC Magazine. It says"cannot
display this web page" etc.

I get this with IE 7.x and a number of sites.

Using windows xp, sp 2.

IE7 questions should be asked in the Internet Explorer newsgroup. There are
quite a few posts there so peruse them for something on topic before posting
a new message.

Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults
Make IE the default browser.

I went there after I read your answer.
But it made no difference.

I still get this:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
a.. You are not connected to the Internet.
b.. The website is encountering problems.
c.. There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

a.. Internet connectivity has been lost.
b.. The website is temporarily unavailable.
SNIP

I know of two causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Frank,

I have run Ad-aware, I have run Spybot, I have NOD32 Anti Virus always up to
date, same for windows xp updates.

I have even downloaded and re-isnatlled IE 7.x (without un-installing the
previous IE 7.x though, since I did not dare to loose anything) I have also
opened some of the hyperlinks which you sent and followed their
instructions, BUT I still cannot open the hyperlink, for example, in the PC
Magazine e-mail, which directs me to a contest.
But the same is true for a number of other websites, but it is selective,
not all.

In Set Program Access and Defaults choose Windows, not Custom.

Did you post your HijackThis log to one of the suggested newsgroups (not
here)?

If you did those I can't think of anything else.
