Hi,
I have a new system from Dell and cannot open
Windows help and support.

Went to online support and they suggested doing
a reinstall of windows which seems a little drastic
since everything else seems to work.
Any help&support would be appreciated.(ha)

Repairs Windows XP's Help and Support

If the above repair does not work:

Go to Start > Run and type in: helpctr -regserver

To reinstall Help and Support:

Go to C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf.
Right-click and choose install. Have your XP CD available.

Note: The folder is hidden by default. Go to Start > Run and type in:
control folders. View: Show hidden files and folders and uncheck
"Hide extensions for known file types".

I have the exact same problem on my new Dell laptop. Everything else works
fine, but Help and Support. I hope there is someone out there who can help.
I have tried reinstalling Windows XP, to no avail. Nothing the Dell
technicians have suggested helps. They even sent me two hard drives to try
that were supposed to contain Help and Support along with everything else,
but when I loaded them up, still no Help and Support!

Or go to Start > run and type in: helpctr -regserver or to totally
reinstall help and support, assuming you installed to C:
Make hidden folders visible first and then go to
C:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf right-click and choose install. You will
need the XP cd and may need to know the location of the folders
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and Windows\System32\dllcache.

Good luck

Thank's for your help Carey & Roger but
neither fix allows me to open it.
Never used it much anyway but still
a nice tool to have.

Go to control panel--administrative tools--- services---scroll down to help
and support, highlight it and click start or restart.

I have a new Dell system too with the same problem. Microsoft recognise
there is a problem and recommend the latest XP update. Microsoft say the
problem surfaces when Network Troubleshooter is used on an OEM machine using a
third party logo, that puts Dell PC's in the frame:) I've also tried
everything on the internet to get the start up help button to work but like
you I've had no success. Someone else on this group suggests maling a shortcut

Try doing a search for helpctr.exe and delete it from the system 32
folder. Help and Support should open right up :-)

Hi. I to had this problem with a Dell which we got a week ago. We resolved
this problem. After days of trawling through sites like this I got really fed
up so I reinstalled windows xp. It turned out that the windows xp home
edition had not been registered on the original start up of the computer. You
will need the windows special code which on my computer is on the side of the
hard drive. Once this had been registered amazement help and support was
there. Hope this works for you as well
