Our business office shares files with approximately 4 staff members a
the least. One file in particular will not open. :(

Whenever an office member attempts to open it from the network drive i
seems to just stall- no error messages or warnings- nothing. It jus
sits there like it is attempting to open it. I have let it sit in tha
"mode" for a maximum of 30-45 minutes before giving up. Then I canno
exit Excel (version 2000) correctly. I have to use ctrl-alt-del.

Any ideas?

Thanks =

Not an expert, but;
Have you tried copying the file to the local machine and opening it?

Might give you a clue.

Thank you for the suggestion. I copied it to the local drive vi
Windows Explorer. When I opened it the same thing happened again.

Across the top the file name along with [Shared] notification came up
the open folder icon appears depressed, below that where the cel
reference is it lists I260, and across the bottom it states, "Openin
file" with the name. Then the little blue boxes that appear when th
saving or opening command are utilized are there not moving.

I have never come across this before. Any other suggestions

Just guesses...

First, the simple attempt: Try cleaning you windows Temp folder to see if it
helps.

If that didn't help, then the next easiest attemp: Try opening it in with excel
in safe mode:

close excel
windows start button
run
excel /safe

Then file|open your workbook.

When excel starts, it opens up a few things (files in your XLStart folder,
addins checked in Tools|Addins, and your *.xlb (customized toolbar file)).

Maybe something is interfering with your workbook and excel.

If that helped, then you can read some tips from Chip Pearson for isolating the
problem:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

If it didn't help, maybe your file is showing its age (start of corruption???).

You might be able to recover more by using another program--both xl2002 and
OpenOffice have better reputations for opening files that earlier versions of
excel couldn't.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:
