Okay... here I go.
I'm a certified repair technician, and I've fixed computers for a
business for the last year and a half, but of course... right now,
I'm about to throw MY machine out the window.
I'm running Windows XP with only SP1 right now.
When I try to open Control Panel, Explorer locks up and my start menu
reloads and all that great junk that it does. It's a never-ending
process.
I've done all the basic solutions that I can think of -- but I might
be forgetting something. I've done System File Checker, because I
figured a dll was corrupt, but I got nothing. My machine is spyware
free. I've never had a problem with spyware, and I've done all the
searches you could imagine. I've done the repair feature on the
Windows XP cd, and that will fix it until about the first reboot, it
seems. No viruses. I've done chkdsk. I've uninstalled all the
latest windows updates, thinking it may have been caused by one of
those. I've tried System Restore and I have a point saved where it
works when I go back to it, but of course after a restart or so, it
doesn't.
THere's nothing funny in my startup. No weird processes. In fact,
I've gone through msconfig and elimated everything.
I have Norton Personal Firewall 2003 and Antivirus 2003. They're both
up-to-date.
I DON'T KNOW! Tell me what you guys think. Is this a corrupt windows
file that probably isn't fixable without a reformat? It's been so
long since I've reformated. I'm going to be so disappointed.
