Hi,

This morning, we login our windows 2000 server stnd, but couldnot open any
directory. for example, when we clicked C: drive, the monitor flashed a
second, and went back normal, seems the these directory disappeared. I check
the Events View, and could not find any error message.

If some one know this issue, Please help.

Many thanks

Try again from the command line. What happens if you logon as a new user?
(create a new account in 'User and Passwords').

Dear Dave,

Many thanks for your quick reply. When I logon as a new user, the screen is
blue background without any icons, such as my computer, recycle bin. Even I
could not see Start, and Dos Command

Any advices will be appreciated.

Dear Dave,

I only can access the directory through web. when I type c:\windows in the
web address, it open straight away.

Sounds like something that was installed doesn't play well with explorer. Do
you have that history?

Dear Dave,
What kind of history do you mention?
That is our ERP database server, and ERP system runs ok.

When did this happen? What was installed since the last successful logon?

Check Event Viewer for errors. Task Manager|File|New Task

eventvwr.msc

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the
right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to
clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Also check Device Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

Dear Dave,

This problem was happened when power-supply for this area was crashed by
thunder storm last Friday. We didn't install any software and hardware.
I check the application log, and find only one error message as below

User: NT Authority\System
Description:
Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a roaming profile,
your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.
Detail-Access is denied. Build number (2195)
No error in the system log.

What happens if you;
Task Manager|File|New Task|explorer.exe

Also check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the
Reg_Sz string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Also try a 'Safe Mode' boot.

Hi Dave,

Whe I open Window explorer even in safe mode, Event View shows error" the
shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted." But registry is
fine.
Reg_Sz string value of "Shell"="Explorer.exe"
is at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

So the shell starts in 'Safe Mode'? If this is the case then something in
the startup dirs or run keys may be to blame.

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys. (note that this window is read-only so you must
manually navigate to the location below to edit or otherwise delete)

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory or AutoRuns
from sysinternals and selectively remove items until the problem goes away.

Hi Dave,

I just removed shell=exploer.exe from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
But I am not sure what else I could remove.

Why would you do that? That one needs to be there. You better quit while
you're ahead and get some help with this.

How do we restore shell=exploer.exe back to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

Check the box for it again. Failing that you can add the string back to the
registry directly.

Thanks. I add this string back to the registry manually. But How do I get
help for this issue?

I think it's beyond the part time nature of this group. You need to find
experienced help locally or possibly call MS product support. You seem to
have narrowed it down to something in the startup dirs or the registry Run
keys so it shouldn't take someone from the local computer shop very long to
diagnose.
