Cannot map network drive to shared c: drive

When I try to map a network drive to a folder on my c: drive, the c: drive
does not come up as a network place even though I have enabled sharing for
this drive. I have tried with the firewall tuned on and off and with norton
turned onand off - same result. Any suggestions?

Is it XP Home or Pro? How about the other system (the server that you're
mapping to)?

What is Norton? Norton AntiVirus? Or Norton Internet Security / Norton
Personal Firewall? Two personal firewalls (Windows Firewall + Norton?) would be
a problem.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer, as a start, and we'll diagnose
the problem.
1) Start - Run - "cmd".
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window.
3) Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!.
4) Open file c:\ipconfig.txt from Notepad.
5) Copy and paste entire contents of the file into your next post.
6) Identify operating system (by name, version, and Service Pack level) with
each ipconfig listing.
7) Please don't munge or omit any detail, as a case like yours will best be
resolved with details.

Many thanks for your reply - subsequent to some trial and error tactics, I
have made a further post on 12th May which gives more details as follows (I
have answered your queries at the end of this post with the ipconfig info):

I have a IBM Thinkpad Centrino running Windows XP SP 2.

For some software that I am running I need to Map a network drive letter to
a folder on my c: drive. I have enabled the sharing capabilities on the
respective folder and for the c: drive - there are two scenarios:

1. When DISCONNECTED from the internet (using a USB Broadband modem):

In My Network Places, when I click "View workgroup computers" I just get a
blank window.

When I try to Map a Network Drive, the tree will not expand beyond Workgroup.

2. When CONNECTED to the internet, I can map a network drive only by going
to Start, Run, typing "\\Computer Name", selecting the shared folder I want
to map from the window, right clicking on it and mapping the network drive.

When I attempt to "View workgroup computers" in My Network Places, I receive
the error message, MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this netwrok resource contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions. (My username does have administrator
priviliages!)

Thus it seems that being connected to the internet bypasses the normal
Microsoft Network and allows me to map the folder locally - this does not
help as I am not always connected.

I have also discovered that when I try to create a new network connection
(Advanced - Accept Incoming Connections), I receive the error message
"Incoming connections depend on the routing and remote access service which
was unable to start. For more information check the system log."

I have now spent 2 days trying to solve this and have called both IBM tech
support and Microsoft, neither of whom have been any help - is there a genius
out there?

Ryan,

An interesting situation. Your inability to view workgroup computers in My
Network Places is possibly caused by the Browser not running.

The Browser depends upon the Server service (aka File and Printer Sharing for
Microsoft Networks) and the Workstation service (aka Client for Microsoft
Networks). I wonder whether CMN and FPSMN are being loaded by the USB drivers.

Look at (Settings - Network Connections) - Local Area Connection - Properties,
and see what components are listed when the USB modem is connected, and when
it's not.

Also, try using the Subst command, rather than trying to map network drives.

It seems as though the components are the same regardless of internet
connection status:

Client for Microsoft Networks - Properties - RPC Service is Windows Locator
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks - Properties is greyed out

The following are also checked in the window entitled "This connection uses
the following items:

Qos Packet Scheduler
AEGIS Protocol (IEEE 802.1x) v3.1.6.0
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I have tried to RUN the Subst command but I just get a quick flash of a
window on the screen and then nothing - any more info on this command?

I looked up the SUBST command on the net and have managed to create a
virtual drive Y: hopefully this will solve the problem!
