Cannot maintain internet connection -- reinstall XP?

I am having a problem with my PC and the only way I know
to solve it is to reformat my c: drive and reinstall
windows and applications.

Here is the PC: Home built P4 (8 months old), Windows XP,
Norton Systemworks, Outlook Express, IE6. No ISP -- I go
right into IE6 and start working.

We have a cable modem that is connected to a NetGear
router with 4 ports. There are PCs attached to ports 1,
2, and 3. I am connected to #2. The other 2 PCs run
normally.

My PC cannot maintain an internet connection. When I boot
the PC, I remain connected for about 60 seconds, then the
connection is dropped. I have figured that
typing "ipconfig /renew" at DOS restores the connection,
but only for about 30-60 seconds (long enough to send and
receive email). I have been looking at all sorts of user
groups and bulletin boards but cannot find a problem even
remotely similar to mine.

All non-Internet applications (Word, Publisher, offline
games, Quicken) work fine.

We are assuming the cable modem and the router work fine,
since 2 of the 3 PCs are still working normally. We think
it might have been something my PC ate.

Here is what we have done, all with no success:

-- Switched my cable from port 2 to ports 1,3, and 4.

-- Turned off the router and cable modem and PCs, wait,
then bring up the modem, router and PC in that order. In
spite of resynchronizing, it didn't work.

-- Restart the PC. Power PC off and reboot.

-- Reinstall Internet Explorer.

-- Run all Norton utilities. Run AdAware6. Run Spybot
S&D (sytem gets hung from application chewing up the CPU).

Any other suggestions, or boards which may have some
knowledgeable folks on them, would be most helpful.

First off, make sure you do not have the options check in your mail program,
to disconnect after sending and receiving mail.
Second, where are you located in regards to the router? Are you using
wireless?
Third, you do NOT need to reinstall XP, if anything, it would be the drivers
for your network card that you're using to connect to the internet.

Other things to try:
Change your NIC cable
Could be a bad NIC card
Do you have the latest NIC card drivers
How about MOBO drivers since it is 'home built'
Possible NetGear firmware issue?

Something else to try...
Remove the NetGear router from the picture and just connect the 'faulty'
computer to the cable modem by itself...does this still happen? If not,
then I would think it is the router.
