Cannot install this harware

I keep getting this error, first when I connected a Sony DSC-P32 digital camera, and next when I connected a SanDisk Memory Stick card reader. Full message:
Cannot Install this Harware
USB Mass Storage Device
An error occured during the installation of the device
The data is invalid.

I am running XP Pro w/SP1

Can anyone help me??
 
Are you installing the software before plugging the object in? You have to.
