Hi all,

I am trying to install Windows XP service pack 2 on one of the machines
at my work place. I am not able to install as I am getting a "Win32
Access denied" error everytime I try to install. Anyone who has a
solution please help. I have religiously followed everything cited in
the Microsoft help documentation. Maybe, there is some setting for the
OS I am missing. Your suggestions will be of great help to me as a lot
of machines here are experiencing the same problem. For you info., the
OS on these machines were installed using images(shouldn't be the cause
of the problem as other machines which were setup using images didn't
act up this way).

To preclude any active process or background app interfering you
can always attempt to upgrade to SP2 from within Safe Mode. As
always be sure personal data is backed up or a system image has
been taken before starting.

Try backing up the users machine and then reimaging the users machine. Then
once the machine has a fresh load on try updating to Windows SP2, then
reinstall all the users files onto the machine, assuming the reinstall works.
If it doesn't work, check to see if you IT department has approved the
upgrade to SP2. I know in the case of the company I work for, any program
that we want to install, we have to have approved by our main IS Department.

Thanks,

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your help. There is one more issue I would like to
share which might be related to this same issue. When I open up the
"Network Connections" folder I cannot find the installed connections
there. Also I get the same Win32 access denied error when I open the
"dependencies" tab in the properties dialog for the "Windows Installer
service". The error however seems to vanish when I uninstall and
reinstall SP2(sometimes I would have to repeat this process). But, this
soln. fails to succeed all the time(also, this may not be a valid soln.
for the problem as well). I am pretty much sure there is some
background process which is blocking some system DLL or some registry
value is corrupted. I don't know whether all the three issues I
mentioned are somehow related.
