Cannot install AVG FRee

I have used AVG Free on all my computers for some time with good
results. On my laptop. running XP Home, i tried to upgrade to 9.0
without success. When I try to download the upgrade stub, the
download is cancelled (by whom?) I try to run the stub over the
network from a good copy on another machine, and I get "Windows cannot
access the specified device path or file. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to access the item." I am running as Admin

Any suggestions?

Having administrator privileges does not change the permissions on a
securable object. It can, however, give you the privilege to change
those permissions. The simplest to use being the "Take Ownership"
privilege, which gives you many allow permissions. Have you done this on
the known good stub?

I should already "own" the stub. I copied it from another computer
to the
desktop. Plus, I can "rename" it. (I am hedging because I am having
trouble
getting into safe mode to change permissions).

Have you tried running the AVG removal tool first?
