Cannot insert picture from file - hour glass hang

When I go to insert a picture from file in either ppt or Word, all I get is
an hour glass. I go to Task Manager and it says powerpoint not responding.

I can create and save new files, I just can't insert pictures. This just
started happening last week.

I have removed and reinstalled Office Professional 2003. I have cleaned and
defragmented my disk. There is plenty of disk space.

Any ideas of what I can try next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Care to tell us the type of picture, and the file size? Have you tried
opening your picture in a paint program and resaving it to see if that makes
a difference?

Do you have your computer set to accept updates from MS automatically?
They released a bad one a little while back - one of the side effects is the
inability to open/save files in Office but there seem to be other bits of
fallout. Have a look here, consider removing the update, and please let us
know how it works out if you do. Thanks! And good luck.

PowerPoint suddenly can't open or save files

It happens with every file as soon as I say insert Picture from File file...
Happens in PPT and Word. I am going to try the other suggestion about
checking updates I have taken automatically for Windows and see if that may
be the issue.

Steve, I do take Windows updates but not sure how to check or remove an
update. Could you pls tell me where to look?

I'd first look at the info pointed to in the link I posted in my earlier reply.

That's a bit daunting, I agree.

If you decide just to try removing the update, do Start, Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs. Put a check next to Show Updates and all of the updates
you've applied should appear; choose and remove the one you want to get rid of.

You may also want to try Detect and Repair. Get back to us with your
results.

Thank you very much. The Detect and Repair in Help did the trick. There was
a missing .CAB file and it asked for my original CD. I put it in and it
automatically finished the repair. It no longer hangs. Again, thank you
very much and my high school son who uses it thanks you too.

Steve -

I was able to use the Detect and Repair function in Help and it worked.
There was a missing .CAB file and it asked for my original CD. I put it in
and it automatically finished the repair.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Thanks for getting back to us with your success.
