Hi, I have Windows XP Pro Ed. with IE6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158,
cipher strength 128-bit. I'm having issues with some websites/webpages.
Internet explorer opens up fine, it goes to most websites, but then if I
click some links on a webpage, it goes to a new page, and I get an error
message. If you want an example, go to staples.com and click the "Now there's
an easy button for your business." image-link on the lower right-hand side.
It's supposed to go to
http://gfx.dvlabs.com/klipmart/campaigns/sta001/easy_button.html. However, I
get:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click
Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should
match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set
Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network
connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then
click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have
installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings
can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the
Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0,
SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

This also happens when I just copy and paste the hyperlink into the address
bar and click GO. I've tried several of the suggestions in some of the other
threads on DNS errors and have done the LSPFix, Winsock fix, and scanned for
spyware, adware, etc. I used SpyBot and Ad-Aware. I have Symantect Antivirus
with autoprotect enabled, but even when it was disabled, I had the same
problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi,
In Internet Options> Security, is Internet Zone set to default? The default
settings shouldn't be blocking this page.

I suspect that a program other than IE is blocking the page at
http://gfx.dvlabs.com/klipmart/campaigns/sta001/easy_button.html

That page prompts the user to allow a Flash presentation to play and a
security program is probably blocking this because it's "active content."

Are you running Norton Internet Security or another program that might be
blocking Flash, scripts, scripting, active content, etc?

I'm currently using ZoneAlarm (free download from www.zonelabs.com) and
Symantec Anti-virus...I honestly don't know which one, if any of these, are
blocking it. I've tried disabling both programs, one at a time, to see which
was blocking the page, but neither seemed to make a difference.

Oops, sorry forgot to say that I have all of the settings for IE6 Security
set to the default settings--from Internet to Restricted Sites.

Hey, I found the answer...
I didn't even think of this, but I have a hosts file that I downloaded from
www.mvps.org. While searching issues with Flash in IE6 General, I found the
following post by Splarn:
_____________________________________________________________________
In XP, look for file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. If you rename
that file (I changed it to hosts.bk2), then ALL the ads appear on nascar.com.
This file blocks certain addresses from working.

Before I renamed the file, I found one line in it for one of the ad sites
that nascar.com is trying to load - ar.atwola.com. When I removed that line
from the hosts file, then the ar.atwola.com ad loaded on nascar.com.

Probably the "smart" thing to do is only remove the lines from the hosts
file which are blocking things you want to see. In other words, renaming the
file allows ALL the sites in it to be accessible on your computer - something
you may not want. My hosts file has around 1000 lines.

This hosts file must have been built by one of the ad blocking programs I've
installed, but uninstalling the program did NOT remove or empty the hosts
file?
Just a guess...

I found information about this hosts file at:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I went in and found gfx.dvlabs.com and deleted it. Now the webpage works!
Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it! :-)

Hi,
Glad you got it resolved & thanks for the update. I should have suggested
that you look at the HOSTS file, but gfx.dvlabs.com seemed legitimate and I
didn't think it would be in a HOSTS file.
