Cannot download anything

I can't download anything to my computer running Windows
XP Pro. Whan I click on something to download and the
downloading screen comes uo it does not know where to
save the download or the time remaining in the the
download.If anyone could help me I need your help.
 
You have to tell the pc where to save your download, how would your computer
know where to save YOUR files. Some downloads never display the time and if
they do it is not always correct.
