Cannot delete partitions

Hello,
I just installed windows XP Pro on a PC and it did not format the hard
drive. I would like to format it and have one clean install. Why cant i
delete the other partitions?
 
If you started the install from within Windows, that is your problem. Boot
your computer from the Windows XP CD - not a manufacturers recovery CD - and
follow the instruction screens for install, not repair. Choose to format
when you get to the appropriate screen.
