I have a message in my outbox that when I click on, Windows Mail has
encountered a problem while displaying this message and check the computer
for low memory or disk space, but it won't let me delete it.

I'm guessing that you are using Norton Security. If so, disable Norton and
see if that solves the problem. If it does, get rid of it and get either AVG
or Avast...both are free. Disabling Norton is sometimes not enough. Try
completely uninstalling it. Replace with the free AVG or Avast, and Windows
Firewall and Windows Defender.

Download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
tend to cause such problems, although seldom immediately, so if you
have such a program, remember where to find the fix - you are likely
to need it again. A recent antivirus from Trend also causes assorted
problems in Windows Mail.

I too have the same problem. I have an e mail, which was a reply to someone
I have written before. New laptop, vist, norton is disabled...it blocks any
out messages I am trying to send. Just get an error message, I can't move it
to another file, nothing. HELP!!!!

Disabling Norton is often not enough. Try completely uninstalling it.
Replace with the free AVG or Avast.

Bob....I don't even have Norton on this computer. It's like the message is
stuck? I cant do a thing with it and I am at a loss. I have Trend instead
of Norton, but everything was fine until I hit reply and it just stuck in the
outbox

For the problems Norton antivirus programs sometimes cause, just disabling
the Norton program is not enough. You have to uninstall it, then run this
cleanup program:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may then also have to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and create the account under Windows Mail
again. Many versions of antivirus programs from McAfee and a recent
version from Trend also have such problems, and the problems are often
slow to show up.

Also, download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program. I recommend either the avast! or the AVG program,
either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part
that scans email.

A recent version of the Trend antivirus program (details not available)
also causes such problems, and must be uninstalled to stop it from
creating problems. The KB941090 fix usually clears up the problems
it has already created, though, although you may need to try installing
both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version to find the one that
matches your version of Vista.

Even if the fix does not delete the problem message, it should make
it possible for you to delete it.

If you want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause such
problems, I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a
custom install where you tell it to leave out the part that scans email.

How did you disable something you don't have?

Hi Robert

Many thanks for all the advice you give but I'm uneasy about this one ...

"install another anti-virus prog ("AVG") disabling "just the part
that scans email".

Sorry if I am being dumb but surely that would result in my leaving myself
wide open to even more probs (i.e. importing viruses)?

Cheers
John

Robert,
Be assured there is no risk to disabling the email scanner. That part of you
AV is redundant. You are still protected as long as the AV is actively
scanning your system.

You're welcome.

No, disabling email scanning just means it takes a little longer to find
the virus. Email scanning seldom works well with Windows Mail,
and some antivirus companies don't allow disabling it even if it
causes problems. Many of them have copied this feature to make
their antivirus programs sound better, but few of them have been
able to make it work without causing problems occasionally.

Disabling email scanning does not increase your risk at all.
